A common misunderstanding about numerology is that it produces one number per person. In practice, a full chart is built from several numbers, each pulling from a different part of the same two inputs — birth date and birth name — and each assigned a narrower job than "describe this whole person."
The life path number, calculated from the full birth date, is usually treated as the broadest of these, covering overall direction and life themes. The expression (or destiny) number, calculated from every letter of the birth name, covers talents and how a person shows up in the world. The soul urge number narrows further still, using only the vowels, and is assigned the most interior question of the set: what does this person actually want, beneath the presentation the rest of the name creates?
A fourth figure, the personality number, is calculated from the consonants left over once the vowels are removed for soul urge — treated as the flip side of soul urge, describing the surface impression rather than the interior desire.
